Nelson Bay

- a Coastal Town Hidden From Modernity

On a holiday to the Port Stephens region of New South Wales I would consistently wake up before the sun had risen to watch it rise over the ocean horizon. Each night I would set my alarm to 1 hour before sunrise at 5:25, wake up, grab my camera with my 35mm lens on and find a place to photograph before I got a coffee. Being awake at this hour makes the world appear soft and motionless, especially in a small coastal town consisting or populated by mostly retirees from Sydney. The morning light would fold over the horizon and start to create long shadows with noticeable diffusion. I would walk around trying to find interesting compositions that incorporate this light with the nostalgic architecture and design analogous with coastal communities.
